A Legacy on the Road

Jones & Sons Trucking is widely recognized as the first Black-owned trucking company in Texas, with roots reaching back to 1950. Founded by Eddie Lee Jones, the business has been built, nurtured, and carried forward by three generations of the Jones family.

From the very beginning, Eddie Lee embodied determination and resilience. In 1971, he became the first Black business owner in the state to be granted trucking authority by the Texas Railroad Commission—a milestone achieved in a time when the trucking industry was closed to many minorities. His courage opened the door for others to follow.

The road was not without challenges. Eddie Lee often faced prejudice and discrimination, sometimes even sleeping in his truck on job sites because hotels would not accept Black guests. Still, he pressed on, driven by a vision to provide for his family and create opportunities in an industry where few existed for people of color.

That drive remains at the heart of Jones & Sons today. “We’re not new to it—we’re true to it,” says current owner David Jones, Eddie Lee’s son. David’s brothers and sons share the same passion, carrying forward the family’s dedication to hard work, quality service, and integrity.

Over the decades, Jones & Sons has hauled countless loads of sand, gravel, and materials across Texas. The business has grown from its original yard—now home to a collection of classic trucks—to a modern facility on Loop 335, where the fleet continues to expand.

Even after more than 70 years, the Jones family’s connection to trucking is as strong as ever. The third generation is already in the driver’s seat, and the fourth is showing interest in continuing the tradition. “It’s in our blood,” says Steven Jones. “Once you smell that diesel smoke, you’re hooked.”

With grit, pride, and a commitment to doing things the right way, Jones & Sons Trucking is rolling confidently toward the future—just as Eddie Lee envisioned.
